Edgewater city councilman, Kristian Teegardin, declared his intent to run for State House of Representatives District 24 seat at the Wheat Ridge city council meeting on the 13th.

Teegardin made his declaration during the citizen’s discussion portion of the meeting. The announcement came shortly after current District 24 Rep. Sue Schafer stated she would not seek a fourth term, electing to be with her family instead. Teegardin will be running as a Democrat.

A resident of Edgewater that works in Wheat Ridge, Teegardin has been a member of Edgewater’s city council since 2011. He made the decision to run for public office after meeting Schafer. He intends to bring his dedication to service to the capitol.

“I never thought I would get into politics but after meeting Sue Schafer and being the teacher that she is, she just inspires folks to go further,” Teegardin said.

“ So I ran for public office and I’ve learned a lot of things … My favorite thing is that I get to work for people. I’m not a boss. I am not a manager. I am a representative and that means that you work for folks and I’m bringing that to capitol.”

As he gears up for the campaign trail, Teegardin said that he would be in Wheat Ridge more often, focusing his attention on bettering the communities in the district through collaboration and a focus on small business and education.

“I believe that we do need a strong education to attract higher-paying businesses. We need to support our small businesses,” he said. “We also have to support our municipal infrastructure and having good relationships and partnerships I think foster communication, collaboration and solutions for the betterment of everybody.”

Before any of that can happen, Teegardin is focused on listening. He heralded listening as an elected official’s primary duty and most powerful ally. He stressed the fact that he cannot do anything before listening.

“It matters not who we are or where we are from. We must listen,” Teegardin said.
