State wrestling: Pomona wraps up 5A crown

DENVER – The demise of the Pomona Panthers was greatly exaggerated.

After a dismal first two rounds that saw eight of the Panthers’ 10 entrants knocked out of the championship bracket, it looked like Pomona’s dreams of capturing the Class 5A state championship was just that – a dream.

But the Panthers are nothing if not resilient. Pomona rebounded to put together a dominating run through the consolation brackets, and had the team title wrapped up by the team the third place matches were finished Saturday afternoon at the Pepsi Center.

Pomona heads into tonight’s finals with an insurmountable 121 points, 21.5 points ahead of second place Ponderosa. The Panthers had five wrestlers place in the morning session with two wrestlers still to compete in tonight’s finals.

Joshua Rosales (120) and Raymond Robledo (132) both won their third place matches, while Tomas Gutierrez (106) and Travis Torres (113) took fourth, while Lucas Vagher (126) finished in sixth.

In 4A action, Broomfield took over first place in the team race, holding a five-point lead over Discovery Canyon 131.5-126.5. But the Thunder have four wrestlers competing in the finals tonight, so a state title isn’t out of the questions.

In other action Saturday afternoon:

• Holy Family and Legacy each had three wrestlers place at the state wrestling tournament. Freshman Ryan Deakin (106 pounds) and senior Connor Casady (160) both took third for the Lightning in 5A, while Skyler McWee (225) placed fifth.

Vincent Casados (113) and Julian Prieto (120) took third for the Tigers in 3A, and Daniel Jansen (220) was fourth. Joseph Prieto is competing for the state title at 126 pounds.

Maurisio Garcia (113) was fifth for Northglenn, while Horizon's Anthony Cortez placed sixth at 106 pounds.

• Deakin and Gutierrez were tied in the 103-pound third place match at 2-2 at the end of regulation in a battle between two promising freshman. Deakin hit a five-point move toward the end of the first overtime period to get the victory.

• Jefferson heavyweight Jesse Lucero was behind in the third period of his Class 3A third-placed match, but he was able to get the pin on Hayden Bickel of La Junta in 4:39.
