SkyView Academy (SVA) is a preschool through 12th grade charter school in Highlands Ranch. While only in its second year, the school won the esteemed John Irwin School of Excellence Award for academic achievement after its first year. The school was created by a group of highly dedicated parent volunteers who opened the doors in September 2010. The mission of the school is to offer a research-based, content-rich liberal arts program with a commitment to foreign language studies and community service. Staff, parents and students are actively involved in a culture of expectation and support where individuals are respected, valued and known by the content of their character.

Overview

A charter school is a tuition-free, public school that has the flexibility to be more innovative and is held account for student achievement. At SkyView, a Governing Board oversees the long-term strategic direction of the school while the Administration team is responsible for the day-to-day management. The foundation of the school sits on five "pillars", each speaking to the students in a targeted manner to help reach our vision of preparing students to be life-long learners and honorable leaders of tomorrow. In our preschool through eighth grade program students focus on character education, service learning, benefit from a daily-taught Spanish program and the strong, well-rounded Core Knowledge curriculum. The college-prep high school program encompasses character education, service learning and the Classical curriculum.

The Primary School: Preschool through Kindergarten

SkyView Academy's Core Knowledge preschool is a premier early childhood learning center designed for those who want their children exposed to a higher level of learning early in life.

The preschool offers math, reading, science and social studies programs for its preschoolers in a fun, nurturing environment. In addition, library visits, art, Spanish, physical education and music instruction, technology-rich classrooms, court and turf areas for outdoor play as well a covered playground with a tricycle track are all part of the daily experience.

SkyView Academy's Kindergarten program provides a developmentally appropriate, content-rich Core Knowledge academic program preparing young children to enter grade school with a strong foundation of cognitive skills, curiosity, social confidence and interest in foreign language.

SkyView Academy Primary School Philosophy

To provide a developmentally appropriate, content-rich Core Knowledge academic program preparing young children in preschool and kindergarten to enter grade school with a strong foundation of cognitive skills, curiosity, social confidence and interest in foreign language.

Upon completion of Kindergarten, primary students will be able to:

• Understand age-appropriate content

• Explore creatively

• Know and care about their school

• Celebrate the uniqueness of individuals

The Elementary School: First through fifth grades

Focused on fostering a joy of learning and a passion for knowledge in each student through a rigorous, research-based and content-rich curriculum, SkyView Academy elementary school is staffed by hard-working, dedicated teachers who help children be more aware and respectful of other cultures, languages and traditions through an integrated foreign language program. Through the learning environment, students have the opportunity to increase their academic achievement and develop strong social skills through effective classroom management strategies and a clear and consistent school-wide discipline policy.

SkyView Academy recognizes that all students might not start at the same level, learn in the same way or master skills at the same pace. The school is dedicated to flexible skills grouping in reading and math while providing a variety of teaching strategies and instructional methods that recognize these differences to make learning accessible to every student.

SkyView Academy Elementary Philosophy

SkyView Academy's Elementary School delivers Core Knowledge content that is aligned with supporting curriculum across disciplines. Combined with an integrated Spanish Language program as well as character education and service learning components, students attain the knowledge, facts and discipline needed to successfully enter middle school grades.

Upon completion of fifth grade, elementary students will be able to:

• Begin to think critically

• Act responsibly by striving to do their best and be their best

• Explore and hypothesize with creative discipline

• Respect their peers, teachers, parents and other individuals, both younger and older

• Care for the physical world: locally, regionally, and globally

The Middle School: Sixth through eighth grades

The SVA middle school at will occupy the lower floor of the remaining 50,000 square feet of the existing SkyView Academy facility, with a phased build-out plan is in development.

SkyView Academy Middle School Philosophy

SkyView Academy's Middle School provides an engaging environment of social acceptance where students learn to use their foundation of Core Knowledge, character education and Spanish to understand relationships, establish connections, value citizenship, and build intellectual confidence in preparation for the high school years.

Upon Completion of eighth grade, middle school students will be able to:

• Think critically and logically

• Write and speak persuasively

• Perform and behave their best

• Value perseverance and the joy of learning

The High School: Ninth through 12th grades

As part of the phased build-out plan in development, the SVA high school will occupy the upper floor of the remaining 50,000 square feet of the existing facility. The SVA high school provides an intimate environment with enrollment intentionally smaller than traditional high schools to ensure that each student is known and valued, but large enough to provide a variety of academic opportunities, athletics, performing arts and club, student-sponsored organizations and leadership opportunities.

SkyView Academy's high school provides a college preparatory experience, providing a classical, liberal arts curriculum that emphasizes core subject areas (math, science, literature and history) as well as foreign language and fine arts. Staff, parents and students experience a culture of high expectations and support with an emphasis on the importance of strong character and meaningful service to society. Comprehensive college counseling assists students and parents with all aspects of preparing for post-secondary education. In addition, the high school aims to provide a lifelong love of learning and offer students unique leadership opportunities.

SkyView Academy High School Philosophy

SkyView Academy's High School prepares graduates for success in college and beyond through use of a classical, liberal arts curriculum that emphasizes core subject areas (math, science, literature and history) as well as foreign language and fine arts. Staff, parents and students will experience a culture of high expectations and support, with an emphasis on the importance of strong character and meaningful service to society.

Upon graduation, high school students will be able to:

• Communicate clearly in a variety of forms

• Think critically and solve problems creatively

• Apply their skills and knowledge to form opinions based on facts, take positions and share

SkyView Academy serves preschool through sixth grade, along with ninth grade. The charter school will continue to add an additional grade each year to reach full enrollment of about 1,500 students in preschool through 12th grade.
