The 2014 Serevi RugbyTown Sevens tournament, Aug. 15-17, promises to be the best yet. 17 teams from eight countries will be competing for the winner-take-all $10,000 purse, including four national teams looking to break onto rugby’s big stage. All five U.S. military branches will participate again, as will the 2012 champion USA Falcons, made up from the national team player pool, and last year’s winners, the USA All-Americans collegiate all-star squad.

Rugby 7s, the quicker variation of traditional 15-a-side rugby union, is the newest Olympic sport set to debut at the Rio 2016 Games. Matches are played seven-a-side in two seven-minute halves.

In addition to the cash prize, the champion will receive an automatic bid to the 2014 Bayleys Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, in the homeland of Serevi founder and rugby legend Waisale Serevi, the “King of 7s.”

Serevi provides professional rugby development programming from youth to elite. A USA Rugby Academy powered by Serevi Training Camp for girls and boys, ages 6 to 14, will take place at Infinity Park Aug. 14 and 15.

Kick off your weekend early as tournament pool play begins Friday, Aug. 15 at 1 through 8 p.m. Admission is complimentary for Free Fan Friday! Take a tour of the adjacent Event Center, and enjoy food and drinks at our Friday Afternoon Club.

On Saturday, a beerfest will take place again this year. “Bruises and Brews” will feature unlimited tastings from 15 craft breweries (mostly local) and three Colorado distilleries, just adjacent to the rugby action for a perfect view with your perfect pour. This year, attendees may purchase larger pours in order to explore the stadium and enjoy the live music up close.

Sunday debuts a “Taste of Glendale”, where more than 10 local eateries will offer meals priced at $5 or less. Diners will be able to enjoy the tournament’s playoffs from the Festival Plaza overlooking the rugby pitch.
