What more fun than going to the park?

Having the park come to you, of course.

That’s what South Suburban Parks and Recreation has in mind with its new Kids Fitness Fun Van, a mobile outdoor kids’ entertainment center, equipped with all the playground favorites, as well as two dueling Wii game centers.

South Suburban Deputy Recreation Manager Clay Shuck said the van, which was paid for with donations from the Rotary Club of Littleton, is intended to make fitness fun and help fight childhood obesity.

“We really want this to be an exciting and high-energy experience for the kids,” Shuck said. “It’s all about getting them outside and getting them active.”

The sporty new Nissan van is shrink-wrapped with a colorful SSPR motif and the Rotary Club logo. Loaded with games and toys, hula hoops, scooters and more, it also comes staffed with friendly SSPR employees trained to engage children of all ages in physical activity and increase their overall health and fitness level.

“The activities are really scalable and can fit in a variety of different-sized spaces,” said Shuck. “There are several fitness spots that I like to spread out depending on how much room you have … then get the kids in a group and get them moving and exercising.”

Shuck also said there are plenty of activities suited for individuals, too.

Part of SSPR’s “Kids Living Well” campaign, the van plays a role in the district’s vision to bring activities to children who may not have access to parks or a local recreation center outside of school.

Great for birthday parties, school and church events, the van comes complete with its own power generation system, a tent for shade, and outdoor speakers.

Hourly rental rates are $50 for residents and $55 for non-residents.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation says it strives to enrich the lives of its residents and foster healthy living through stewardship of the environment, parks, trails, and open space by providing a variety of recreational services and programs.
