NONPROFIT: Employee Giving Campaigns

Here at Goodwill Industries of Denver, we are about to embark on our 3rd annual Employee Giving Campaign. It’s a two month campaign that begins in late October and runs through the end of the year. Through a partnership with Mile High United Way, Goodwill employees are able to give directly to more than 100 charitable organizations in the Denver area through a simple payroll deduction. Denver’s branch of United Way has carefully selected these impact investment partners by considering the positive difference they make through three initiative focus areas of School Readiness, Youth Success and Adult Self Sufficiency.

Goodwill decided to be a part of this giving campaign in the spirit of giving back to our community and showing that it’s not all about Goodwill here at our headquarters. While our own mission focuses on job training and education, our employees also care about lots of other great causes, too. The partnership with the United Way allows them to easily support those other organizations; they can donate to the campaign at large, or they can choose a specific charity to back.

In addition to making donations to charities working with the United Way, Goodwill encourages staff to donate to an Employee Assistance Fund. This fund allows our organization to help its employees who are struggling with unforeseen financial and/or personal challenges. So far this year, 93 Goodwill employees have received assistance from the EAF. Not only does this fund help employees who are struggling, it also helps our organization feel like a team.

While you may be wary to ask your employees to donate money to funds of any kind, it’s a great way to create unity in your organization. Rather than setting a dollar amount goal each year, we just aim to increase company-wide participation. When thinking about how to kick off the campaign, consider throwing some fun elements into the mix. For instance, we hold a chili cook off event, and employees who participate in the campaign are entered to win a free vacation day. It’s no secret that unifying the staff of an organization helps it grow in strength, size, and mission. For us, it’s all win/win, and it’s in keeping with our mission to make a more sustainable community.

Remember, not every campaign has to look the same. You can tailor yours to fit your company’s size or style.
