NONPROFIT: Building Futures
Column by David Miller
It may be the beginning of the year, but the college students in our lives are already thinking about summer vacation, and the valuable internships that can help them build toward productive futures.
At The Denver Foundation, we know students who spent last summer teaching classes about college life at the Colorado Center for the Blind, gutting fish with Environmental Learning for Kids, organizing community conversations on mass incarceration with The Conflict Center, and one lucky young man even had the chance to meet singer Sarah McLachlan and actor Taye Diggs through the Colorado Symphony. They had these experiences as part of The Denver Foundation's Nonprofit Internship Program.
If you know a college student who would benefit from a paid internship in the Metro Denver nonprofit sector, have them visit our website at denverfoundation.org. We are now recruiting students for the summer of 2012, and the deadline is fast approaching on Monday, Jan. 23.
Interns are Metro Denver residents who attend colleges and universities throughout the United States, or out-of-area students who attend college here in Metro Denver. They share the common goals of learning about Metro Denver's nonprofit sector and working to improve their communities. Nonprofit host organizations receive a grant from The Denver Foundation, and work hard to put together a great summer experience that engages their intern in all aspects of the organization.
The Nonprofit Internship Program has been operating since 2007, and we've placed nearly 80 interns in nonprofit organization jobs. Several interns are now working in the nonprofit sector, while others are looking forward to participating as board members, donors and volunteers.
The foundation welcomes donors and businesses who are willing to help sponsor interns. Last year, the internship program received funding from the Colorado Health Foundation and the Charles E. Schweppe Fund of The Denver Foundation, as well as The Women's Foundation of Colorado.
