Grass fire in Palmer Lake quickly contained

A small fire in Palmer Lake near the railroad tracks was quickly contained before it spread.

The fire, which was caused by a blown transformer, started around 4:45 p.m. on June 3. The fire was located off of Spruce Mountain Road just north of County Line Road near the Douglas County line.

Palmer Lake Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Abby Vierling said fire crews had the fire controlled 15 minutes after being called to the scene. She said the fire was fully contained by 9 p.m. and crews remained on scene throughout the night to make sure it didn’t flare up again.

She said the fire was contained to a small area on the east side of the railroad tracks. It burned scrub oak and cattails.

It also burned the communication power line poles for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.

There was no interruption to the train schedule.
