Stephen O. Hildebrandt, son of retired Air Force Col. and Mrs. Oliver Hildebrandt of Monument, was one of more than 1,500 cadets who entered their freshman year at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Cadet Hildebrandt was accepted into the Academy after completing six weeks of intensive field training, physical conditioning and survival instruction. The cadet will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in one of 21 fields of study and will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. Cadet Hildebrandt is a 1974 graduate of Lewis Palmer High School.

Simla Day will be on Labor Day. It will start at 11:30 a.m., when the Town Volunteer Fire Department will serve free hamburgers and drinks. Kuntry Kusins will play starting at lunchtime and throughout the afternoon. Nichols Trillage Tools will provide the entertainment. There will also be a 4-H Dog Show sponsored by the Fire Department. Kathy Rickart will be in charge. At 2 p.m. will be the the sixth-annual horseshoe tournament. There will also be a trap shoot at the Simla Gun Club.

Alta Kendrick, known as “grams” to her relatives and friends, is expected home early this week after surgery at Penrose Hospital. Mrs. Betty Stallsmith and Mrs. Margaret Lehl are also expected home after surgery.

The Palmer Lake School buses will load and unload at the new road east of the elementary school grounds instead of at the High Street corner.

The “Young at Hearts” will meet Sept. 10 at 11:30 a.m. for a potluck luncheon in the Monument Baptist Church. Robert L. Chadbourne, author of the book “Gems and Minerals of the Bible,” will present a slide presentation based on his study of 62 gems and minerals known in biblical times. Chadbourne is a widely acclaimed lecturer on rocks and minerals. All people older than 55 are welcome for a potluck luncheon and fellowship.

Enroll now in Temple Christian Schools, kindergarten through 12th grade. The school offers spiritual enrichment, academic excellence, patriotic emphasis and a full athletic program. It is a ministry of Pine Crest Baptist Temple.

Lewis Palmer now has a free lunch program for children unable to pay for the price of the meal. There is a criteria to determine if a child is eligible which uses the family size and income. Families with high expenses in areas that take up to more than 30 percent of their income may also apply.
