Event offers chance for running, throwing
Time for all youth of Brighton to get their shoes laced up and their throwing arms ready. It’s time for the Brighton Kiwanis All Comers Track Meet, held at Brighton High School’s Football Stadium at 10 a.m. Saturday, with registration starting at 9 a.m. This is free, fun exercise for all children of the community.
Brighton Kiwanis has been doing the All Comers Track Meet for as long as former Brighton High School track Coach John Martinez can remember. Kiwanis gives towards children in the community. Each participant that crosses the finish line will receive a ribbon.
“The event is a non- competitive and a fun way for children of the community to celebrate one another winning,” Martinez said.
Saturday’s meet will mark the start of the Colorado Association for Recreational Athletics track program for the summer. The Kiwanis meet is a Hershey’s and Amateur Athletic Union qualifier for the youth 9-14 age range state meets held later in June. Martinez asks that those youth ages 9-14 bring a birth certificate.
The 50-yard dash, shuttle run (younger children), 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter and the mile are the running events, along with the standing long jump and softball throw are the events held at the meet this year.
“I enjoy the Kiwanis Track Meet very much,” Martinez said. “Parents bring their kids out to work with other kids and for the exercise. Especially in CARA track, parents will tend to bring their children out to help try to get them to break away and be more independent. It is really nice to just see the kids from elementary and junior high develop and become state champions later in high school.”
Those children ages 4-16 are still able to register for the CARA track program by going to the Brighton Recreation Center website . For further information you may also contact Coach John Martinez at 720-422-0591.
