Egg hunt treats kids with candy and fun

It was a mad dash for candy-filled eggs during the annual Hyland Hills Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday.

More than 800 children raced to gather as many egg as possible at Carroll Butts Park in Westminster, a race that lasted only about three minutes.

“I always take my children to this egg hunt because it’s so much fun,” said Westminster resident David Perks. “But you have to make sure you get here on time, because once the egg hunt starts, it’s over really fast.”

The Hyland Hills Park and Recreation District has sponsored the hunt for more than 43 years.

Each year approximately 10,000 goodies, including hard candy, chocolate and stuffed animals, are placed in the sports fields at the park. The Easter bunny always shows up for the fun and Hyland Hills employees volunteer their time every year to make this annual tradition happen.

“We are so kid-oriented in our district that we have no problem getting employees to volunteer,” said Joann Cortez, communications director for Hyland Hills. “The annual Easter Egg Hunt is one of our favorite events.”

Over the years snowstorms have canceled the event. But for those dedicated parents, the egg hunt turns into a drive-by event, with parents stopping by for Easter candy.

“I have been around on very snowy Easter egg hunt days where we had to shovel out to the street to hand out treats to kids whose parents drove them by,” said Joe Demers, recreation superintendent.

But this year the weather was perfect for an egg hunt. Children up to the age of 8 left the park with filled baskets and smiling faces. For Thornton resident Maggie Smith, this event not only gives her kids something fun to do, but also helps with her budget.

“What’s great about this event is that my kids get to leave with some Easter candy, candy I didn’t have to buy,” she said. “Things are expensive now, so it’s nice when an organization helps out the community.”

Since the inception of the Hyland Hills Easter Egg Hunt more than half a million treats have been given and over 800 employees have volunteer their time.
