Since 2007, U.S. House Rep. Ed Perlmutter has used grocery stores in the 7th Congressional District for more than shopping.
He uses them to reach out to his constituents during his Government in the Grocery events.
“This kind of access is essential to the fabric of our democracy and makes me a better representative for the district,” Perlmutter said. “The goal is to just listen to folks. We write down the issues they bring up and their viewpoints or challenges and try to help them the best we can.”
The next Government in the Grocery will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 19, at Safeway, 10300 Federal Blvd. in Federal Heights. These events take place every other month.
“The ‘Government in the Grocery’ events are important for me because it helps me gain a better understanding of the challenges and issues facing them day in and day out,” Perlmutter said. “My goal is to walk away better educated and better informed about my constituents’ needs and then determine what I can do to help them — whether it’s here in the district or in Washington D.C.”
The congressman travels to different cities in his district, from Commerce City to Thornton to Golden. To date, he has met with more than 1,000 people during 91 Government in the Grocery events.
“We typically set up a table and a few chairs in a certain section inside the grocery store,” Perlmutter said. “Then we hold one-on-one talks with folks about everything from foreign affairs to small business grants to the chances of the Broncos reaching the Super Bowl again this next year.”
The 7th Congressional District covers the cities of Thornton, Northglenn, Westminster, Federal Heights, Arvada, Golden, Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Commerce City and Edgewater.
