A brace of tries by stand in scrum half Vince Composto led the scoring bonanza at Paintbrush Park on Saturday. The visitors from South West Denver area, SWARM RFC, came to Castle Rock in the hope of improving on their 0 and 2 record, they scored in the 1st minute of the game and stunned The Pirates.

Captain and 8-man Tamatea Bartlett, rallied the troops and shortly after the restart Castle Rock got back into the game, prop Jake Hotzfield scoring a well deserved try. The home side began to play some exciting rugby. Playing into a strong wind, Bennett Howland made some strong runs, SWARM were back peddling and gave an easy penalty for fly half Michael Kirby to add another 3 points to his growing tally.

The Pirates grew in confidence, taking the game by the scruff of the neck and winning good possession by some fierce rucking. This gave Composto space and time to operate, his pace and skill earning him his first try of the game. Kirby picked up the extra 2 points and found his groove. The California went on to complete a further 4 successful kicks during the game, bisecting the posts each time with sublime accuracy.

With the wind at their backs in the second half, Castle Rock applied more pressure on SWARM, top try scorer Vinnie Martinelli benefiting from slick play by Kaden Forsgren, Gabe Mascarenas and full back Aidan Donahue. Man of the Match Vince Composto robbed the ball from his opposite number, to dive over for his second, the lead was extended.

SWARM battled bravely to score tries of their own, The Pirates took their foot off the gas a little in the final quarter and allowed the away side, who battled bravely to the end, to cross the line twice to make the scoreboard more respectable.

The Pirates go on the road next weekend on a mini tour, facing reigning D2 champs the Jnr. Gents from Aspen on the Saturday and then playing a friendly scrimmage against Grand Junction the day after.
