Business group seeks rummage items for sale

The South Lakewood Business Association is hosting a rummage sale to raise money for its Jefferson County Public Schools scholarship funds, and is looking for item donations from residents.

The sale is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Lakeview Wellness Center, 7864 W. Jewell Ave.

Items can be dropped off in advance if needed, or they can be dropped off the day of the sale.

Suggested items include home and office items that are not needed anymore, but still in good condition.

“We’re one of three business associations in the city, made up of business leaders and residents who have always been active in the community,” said SLBA president Kate Van Fleet.

“We have an annual silent auction in December, but we thought if we had another fundraiser we could give more money to the scholarships.”

This is the first year that the SLBA is trying something like this, and it came after a board meeting on how to raise more funds for students. Van Fleet has had experience trying a similar project before, and thought a rummage sale would be a good way to go.

According to Richard Sotiros, former SLBA president and current board member, the idea for the organization to focus on providing scholarships to students came from SLBA founder John Gunzer.

“John had the idea originally for any graduate from Alameda High School, which was near his business (Front Range Lumber),” Sotiros said. “We’ve expanded to include Bear Creek High School students as well.”

Sotiros said most of the scholarships have been in the $500 to $1,000 range, but it all depends on how much money the organization raises.

“We’d really like to be able to give these students more money to help them with college,” Sotiros said. “It’s a really heartwarming thing to see, and we’re hoping we get some help with making it happen.”
