Are You Checking In or Checking Out?

Have you ever found yourself arriving at a hotel or a resort earlier than the check-in time? If you arrive before noon you might just get this question as you approach the registration desk, “Are you checking in or checking out?”

Come on, can’t we all relate to feeling the same way sometimes in our everyday lives? We wonder if we are checked in or looking for a way to check out. And just like some of the hotels and resorts these days that offer their guests a "rapid" check-out option, I know that there are times when we too would love the same "rapid" check-out option to our challenges.

And then we see it in our friends, family members, employees and sometimes even in our bosses. It appears as though they have checked out. Maybe it is just for a few minutes, and at other times it feels like they have been checked out for a while.

How about you, are you fully engaged and always eager to go, or are you more in the “check please” club?

There is no doubt that we all carry burdens at different times in our life, and for some they seem to come faster and harder than others. But there has to come a time for most people when we truly desire to check back in. Are you checking in or checking out?

There are several ways to check back in to our personal and professional lives. But the first thing that has to happen is awareness. We either become self-aware, owning it, or someone is brave enough and strong enough to point out to us that we seem to be living on a different planet lately, distant and distracted, maybe spreading ourselves too thin to be able to be effective in any aspect of our lives.

Getting the proper amount of sleep or rest is key to becoming re-energized. Many people I speak with who find themselves in the check-out lane talk about being so tired that they cannot focus. If something is keeping you from sleeping or getting rest, talk with your doctor about options, seek experts who specialize in sleep disorders, try meditation, and maybe even prayer. I know that when I can’t sleep prayer helps me tremendously. If you are interested, send me an email and I will send you my prayer.

Exercise is another huge factor in checking back into the game of life. Even if it as simple as a consistent walking routine or getting back into a rigorous fitness plan, studies show that physical activity helps to stimulate motivation.

Lastly I would highly recommend spending time reading positive stories and books, listening to motivational programs and music, and/or watching inspirational video programs or movies. Find the most up-beat positive person you know and spend time having coffee, sharing telephone conversations or even daily text messages. I say this because the input in our lives has a direct effect on the output of our lives.
