Chandler Guetz of Kiowa is packing up her shin guards and is heading to New Mexico.

Guetz, 18, a senior at Ponderosa High School and Kiowa resident, recently signed a commitment to take her soccer career to the collegiate level with the University of New Mexico.

A midfielder with Mustangs soccer, Guetz is a four-year varsity starter at Ponderosa, where she also plays basketball. In 2008, she received first team All-Continental League honors as a junior. She was a second team All-League selection in 2007 and received honorable mention in 2006. In both 2007 and 2006, she received Most Valuable Player accolades as well.

Guetz said her decision to sign with New Mexico was partially by intuition.

“Going to New Mexico just feels right,” she said. “It was a beautiful campus and a great team to become a part of when I visited. I plan to study business and law.”

The Mustangs standout said she enjoys the competitive nature of soccer the most and loves battling against other players, knowing when she has played her best.

Guetz began playing soccer at the age of 3 and has loved the sport ever since. She aspires big for the Mustangs as her senior season approaches this spring.

“I hope that as a team we accomplish winning state,” Guetz said. “As an individual, I hope to receive all-state honors this year.”

Among her favorite high school soccer moments, Guetz said one that sticks out in her mind was during her freshman season when she scored her first goal for Ponderosa.

“It was at Littleton Public Stadium, while playing Heritage,” she said. “We ended up losing, but it felt great as a personal accomplishment.”
